How to best manage the mental and emotional load of running a Small Business

A weight that is often bared by Small Business Owners can be very heavy both mentally and emotionally.

In fact, if you haven’t run a Small Business, it’s difficult to imagine the stress and anxiety that can build at times.

I’ve put together some tips to help manage the mental and emotional load of running a Small Business in bullet points so it’s easy for you to read and digest!

  • STOP - cease looking at what everyone else is doing. It’s important to know what’s going on in your Industry. Once you understand the landscape it’s time to disconnect. You are on your own path and it’s important that you create your business to suit you and your customers.

  • Revisit your strategy for your short term and longer term. You must always have goals for your business.

  • Is what you’re doing in your business still applicable? Very often we need to adjust and evolved for a variety of reasons. If your tactics & actions are no longer working, it’s time to tweak / adjust / pivot. Take action rather than thinking about it, as this will lessen the mental load and worry.

  • Remind yourself that business is not a game of comparison. Given that, most Business Owners will have been on a similar journey to you, it’s just that it’s not often spoken about.

  • Revisit your mindset. I often find that if Business Owners mindsets are not geared for success, it can be themselves that are making matters more difficult than what they need to be.

  • It's what you do NOW that matters most.

  • Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs and Business Owners ~ people that can relate yet also inspire.

  • Remind yourself of your purpose and your why. There was a reason you started your business, so it’s important to stay on your course.

  • Itemise all the things that you need to fix in your Business, then prioritise which element you need to fix first. Stepping stones all the way.

  • Look after your energy. It’s so important you maintain your passion and enthusiasm for everything you need to complete. Find the things that give you energy (exercise, people, activities…) and make time to incorporate these elements very regularly.

  • Be kind and compassionate towards yourself, running a Business is a tough gig.
