Why Instagram is so Popular

Instagram is a popular Social Media channel which I encourage my Business Coaching clients to harness.

Whether you’re running a business or simply enjoy scrolling through other people's photos, there’s something for everyone when it comes to Instagram.

We all know that a picture tells a thousand words. Instagram has the ability for followers to engage with the user posting the image, and instantly emotion is attached. We have become a social society and enjoy telling others what we are eating, selling, seeing and enjoying -  in real time.  This is called new media.

What is new media?

It’s on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere on a digital device, which provides the ability for interactive user feedback. This is the perfect platform to capitalize on for businesses, with the ability to connect and attract new followers to your community, telling them about your offering.

A big draw card is that Instagram is free. It’s a huge bonus when it comes to sharing information about your business!

The app is easily downloaded from iTunes and doesn’t contain any advertising in your newsfeed. The fact that your message isn’t disrupted with paid advertising from others means you’re simply connecting with those that choose to follow you, and not competing with other businesses who pay to expand their reach and exposure. This is a common complaint from Facebook users and the reason why many choose to spend more time on Instagram.

The community you can create as a business is incredibly powerful and in most cases very positive. Through communicating with a voice of authority and being consistent with your messaging, not only can you generate sales for your business, but you also have the ability to establish positive change in the world. The community you attract via Instagram can be global, or targeted specifically to your local area. It’s completely up to you.

Through the use of hashtags, this gives the ability to attract the relevant followers which are suitable for your business. There‘s also the ability to search for trending keywords and hashtags, which then helps in gaining likes, followers and a rise in visitor traffic to your website. For my business, Relauncher, I created the hashtag #mindfulbiz. I tell my Business Coaching clients & event attendees to use this when they talk about their ‘mindful business’.

Through this simple use of the hashtag, I’ve been able to create a community of like-minded conscious individuals and businesses where they can connect via Instagram. I also repost images where the hashtag has been used – encouraging others to use the hashtag, whilst also giving those that use the tag increased exposure and reach for their business at the same time. It’s a powerful way to create a community and support what it is they are doing.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Instagram is also incredibly powerful when it comes to engaging others via emotion. It’s all about the image. As with any marketing material, it’s important to be consistent on a number of levels. This includes content, branding, tone of voice and timings of when posting images.

Peak Times

The best times of the day to post are also the best times of the day you like to take a break and have a bit of downtime. Generally peak times to post on Instagram are:

7am – 9am;
12pm – 1:30pm;
3 – 3:30pm;
5 – 5:50pm;
7:30 – 9:30pm.

Instagram is also fabulous for getting to know your customers and followers. If someone asks a question, be sure to respond in a timely manner. It’s another form of customer service and should be used with this in mind.

I always ask my Business Coaching clients and event attendees how they heard about me. Over 50% of them say via Instagram! If you’re running a business and using Instagram, be sure to ask your customers how they found you. It’ll give you a steer on whether you’re using Instagram effectively or to its full potential. Granted, not all businesses are suited to have sales conversion rates via Instagram, however this is an example of what Instagram is capable of.

    I’d love you to write an article about setting up a website e.g.: template or build from scratch and which platforms are the best.
