Aro Hã Retreat Wellness Retreat New Zealand

Aro Hã Room - the view through the window behind me is incredible!

Recently, I had the most wonderful experience attending Aro Hã, a Wellness Adventure Retreat in New Zealand's South Island.

Those who have already seen many of the images I posted on Facebook and Instagram will know that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.  In fact, more than a week later, I'm still feeling the lasting effects!

My mind has more space, my exercise regime has been kicked up a notch and I'm far more mindful and appreciative of the food I eat.  I've also slowed down (hard to believe, I know...)!

Below I've outlined the retreat based on my experience and visit.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to drop me an email - I'm happy to answer any questions you may have!

About Aro Hã:

Zen-inspired Luxury

Aro Hã is a relatively new world-class health retreat, based in New Zealand’s South Island.  I flew into Queenstown Airport and was picked up by a friendly staff member from Aro Hã. The retreat lies in Glenorchy, a 45-minute scenic drive away.

This 8.4 hectare eco-retreat provides a unique wellness experience and is designed to bring life-changing results.  The focus is on movement, clean food, restorative practices and mindful living. It's certainly not for the faint-hearted, but at the same time you'll be surprised at what you're capable of when you're in such an uplifting environment.

Biz partners Damian Chaparro and Chris Madison are the creators behind this NZ$32 million health retreat.  Together they created Aro Hã with a vision for their visitors to experience adventure, movement, results-orientated fitnessmindfulness and optimal nutrition.

The entire time I felt like I was living inside a postcard.  The incredible views of snow capped mountain ranges, Lake Wakatipu and the forest were incredible.

Aro Hã is self-sustainable through the use of self-generated power, rainwater tanks, passive house techniques, and a permaculture garden.  Every effort has been taken to minimise impact on the natural environment and its resources.

With the view being maximised throughout the entire retreat facilities, any stress and tension from the modern-day world evaporates within minutes of arriving.

It's no wonder this retreat has been ranked #8 in the top 100 world hotels and resorts by readers of Conde Nast Traveller.

The Activities:

The programme has been carefully designed allowing everyone to relax and enjoy each day of movement, massage and education.

A typical day at Aro Hã starts at 6am, with the sound of a chiming singing bowl signalling it's time to get ready for a 1hr sunrise yoga class in the Aro Hã room.  The view is breath-taking (see the pic at the top of this blog post!)

We then stepped out into the wilderness after having breakfast, to begin a 3-4hr hike through New Zealand’s spectacular heritage parks.

Each hike was unique - some steeper than others, with varying landscapes to enjoy.  At some point along each hike, we experienced 'mindful walking' which I particularly enjoyed.

Lunch back at Aro Hã was then followed by a much needed deep tissue massage to relieve the soreness from the variety of exercise.

Following this, there was another exercise class (pilates / cardio), then a talk or raw cooking class.

Each day concluded with a restorative yoga and meditation class, before enjoying a delicious meal and an evening of mingling, relaxing, and spa time.

The group bonded particularly well.  We came as individuals, and left as friends.  All activities including meal time were attended as a group.  Although everyone had varying fitness levels, we all completed the activities in our own time and were under no pressure from others.

The spa facilities included a sauna (both infra red & traditional), Japanese Relaxation Room, Hot Tub & Plunge Pool.
Hot Tub is  shown in the pic above.

The Food:

The menu at Aro Hã has been carefully created to provide a detoxifying cuisine based on paleo principles - vegan, raw and largely gluten & dairy free.  This is my idea of heaven, and I'm sure it's yours too!!

Each meal served was presented like a piece of art, with the flavours like no other.  Enjoying food which is so nutrient dense allows you to eat less than you would otherwise.  Each meal was packed with so much goodness, providing ample energy to keep up with the highly active program.

  • 6 days/5 night retreat from NZD $5,200
  • 7 day/6 night retreat from NZD $6,250

Looks amazing, so often we forget the benefits of taking time for ourselves to recentre and work on strategies that will help us manage everything going on in our lives. Retreats like this are an investment in not only your physical health but your mental health. I was fortunate enough to meet Alison at Gwinganna Health retreat – a key turning point in experiencing the benefits of “time out” – I woud love to go here thanks for writing about this one.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I hope to go on a retreat soon – I’ve been spending time doing quite a bit of research because there are so many different types to choose from. This certainly looks like it does the job in terms of being well rested but also loads of movement. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
