Floating for Wellbeing

Bondi Junction Float Tank & Natural Health Care

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been floating in a tank – basically, an alternate wellness adventure.

Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it. If you’ve never heard of a float tank before, it’s basically a tank that is filled with water and a dense salt solution (Epsom Salt – Magnesium Sulphate) which allows you to float effortlessly whilst having a feeling of total weightlessness.

The water is around 50cm deep, and at body-temperature. The water feels warm when entering the tank and even after being in there for an hour, you won’t get cold. With the water this temperature, it’s difficult to tell where your skin ends and the water begins ~ quite an unusual experience!

Lying on your back whilst floating is so relaxing. Your senses become heightened as you’re floating in darkness and silence (you can choose to have music if it suits you better that way). For those that don’t like the idea of floating in pure darkness, you can put something in the door to allow a crack of light through (this is what I did!).

Each session is 1hr, which is equivalent to 6hrs sleep!

This is me floating (usually the door is pulled down to create a dark silent cocoon-like environment)

The benefits are enormous:

  • Reduces stress & anxiety
  • Provides peace of mind
  • Deep rest
  • Reduces heart rate & blood pressure
  • Reduces any back pain
  • Stimulates Alpha & Theta brain waves which are associated with creative insights and meditative states
  • Cleanses the body of toxins
  • Speeds healing and recovery from physical activity and injury
  • Creates an ideal environment for meditation and relaxation
  • Speeds recovery from Jet Lag

Although I didn't fall asleep during my sessions, I completely zoned out and lost all sense of time. For some, the thought of floating in a tank for 1 hour may seem like an eternity, but in the warm relaxing dark environment, time is something you don’t tend to think about. For me, although I was awake, I don't remember any of my thoughts. It was peaceful and meditative.

After each session, I felt extremely relaxed and very thirsty. Although water is provided when you leave, it’s worth taking extra with you. My sleep each night after the float was incredibly deep and restorative which was great.

Popping up after the float session

While you can purchase individual float sessions, I recommend an introductory 3-float package to get the full benefits. Although I relaxed during the 1st session, it was unfamiliar and took a little getting used to. In the following float sessions I relaxed instantly which was amazing. Each float gave me slighly different sensations from the point-of-view of the mind ~ this is why I think ongoing float sessions would be highly beneficial.

For those wondering, no you don’t get wrinkly like a prune whilst floating. The high salt content prevents this. Also, your skin feels slippery from the salt while you’re in the tank – I really liked this.

There’s a single & twin room available if you’d like to float at the same time with a friend.

I did my float sessions at Bondi Junction Float Tank & Natural Health Care.
