How Tim West went from a personal trainer to create his own franchise brand

Tim West Personal Trainer

Tim West was involved in various team sports throughout senior schooling, and continued to pursue his interest in fitness and sports after school as a Personal Trainer, completing a degree in sport science and working with clients one-on-one for almost 15 years. An avid researcher and driven for excellence, Tim continuously explored methods and opportunities that would allow him to better service his clients, and those of his networks within the Fitness industry. This constant pursuit has seen Tim evolve from a PT to the Managing Director and co-founder of international fitness franchise, 12RND Fitness and UBX Training, currently the fastest growing boxing and strength provider in the world.

In 2003, in the emergence of SMS promotions and marketing, Tim launched FitText, a tech-based service that sent clients exercise programs via SMS to train from home. After the success of FitText, Tim's next venture was a booking system called, EzyClient, designed to assist fitness professionals and businesses in managing their client appointments and payments; and was quickly picked up by gym giant, Goodlife. Tim later sold the tech behind these two ventures, and invested into the Jetts gym franchise, becoming one of the very first club owners for the brand.

Culminating his experience as a Personal Trainer, Gym Owner and Tech entrepreneur, Tim began 12RND Fitness, which offers boxing and strength workouts that mimic the physical demands of a 12 Round championship fight, and provide the ability to learn how to box without stepping into a ring, or ever getting hit. The concept was designed to address the ongoing issues Tim observed throughout his career that made it challenging for his clients to commit to their fitness long enough to see results.

Tim recognised that sport was one of the most enjoyable forms of fitness, and when clients enjoy their workouts, the are more consistent in their training. He also acknowledged that there was never any class timetable structure that was suitable to everybody. Therefore, to address these two key areas, Tim decided that he would incorporate boxing as a main component of the training, and utilise the traditional Boxing timer to allow for "No Fixed Class Times".

The combination of enjoyment, convenience and sports science behind 12RND led to it's immediate success, with the first club reaching capacity in only 3 months as a result of word-of-mouth. Members loved the workout so much that they were bringing their friends, family and colleagues along and signing them up. As a result, Tim expanded into a second location, and by 2016 the first franchise was sold. Today, the 12RND Fitness brand has over 80 locations across Australia, and has recently expanded internationally under the name UBX Training, with a New Zealand club opening in August 2019, and Singapore launching in February 2020.
